Today we look at “Motion Steps” & “Dribble Steps”

A “dribble step” is exactly what it sounds like - the step you take when you dribble!

“Motion steps” are the steps you take when the ball is at your hip.

When dribbling with your right hand a typical rhythm would be to dribble with your left, step with your right and then dribble again with your left. Basically dribbling every other step.

But there are times where we need to take back to back motion steps and today we are going to look at that timing and how to get to secondary moves out of it!

Shift your weight laterally by splitting your feet (ball-side foot forward).

As you cross over you want to cross step into a floating speed stop (right-left when going to left). 

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Drop Cross to Pull

Crossover with your fingers to the floor (not straight ahead of you). This will allow you to get the ball out in front and allow you to run to space.

Going right to left you will step right-left and then dribble on your second right step. 

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Drop Cross to Motion Steps

Crossover Breakdown

A “Heavy Foot” is a sudden disruption of your rhythm. We want to pause on our inside foot with our eyes to the middle. This is important because it gives us the option to get to a pocket pass and can freeze the help-side defender.

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

2 Dribble Heavy Foot

Get back to our drop cross action and take 2 steps with the ball at your hip. Dribble and pause on your 3rd step before getting to the rim.

Mix up your finishes.

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Motion Steps to Heavy Foot

Heavy Foot

Start by getting to your “Drop Stance” (split stance). As you get downhill with your first step, punch the ball and open your hips to attack out at a 120° angle to create separation.

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Angle Out

After getting to your drop cross you will take 2 motion steps (steps where the ball is at your hip) and then dribble on your 3rd step.

At this point you will get to your angle out.

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Motion Steps to Angle Out

Angle Outs

Punch the ball with your inside foot and swing your outside foot over the top. This gives you 2 strides towards the rim.

Mix up your finishes. 

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Swing Steps

Take your 2 motion steps off of the crossover and get to your swing step on the 3rd step.

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Motion Steps to Swing Step

Punch the ball with your inside foot and spin quickly. Don’t pick up the ball too quickly - this will help avoid travel calls.

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

2 Dribble Spin

Take your 2 motion steps and punch the ball on the 3rd step to get into your spin. 

•1st set is going right • 2nd set is going left • Reps = Makes

Spins

After your drop cross we want you to take 2 motion steps and then get to your push cross. The objective is to cover as much ground as you can with 2 dribbles.
