Prānāyāma is the control and expansion of prāṇa. Prāṇa lives in and around us, but it is inside where we can learn control. This is why prānāyāma practice, like bandha, helps to manage our internal environment so we can respond rather than react to the external world. It is a very humbling practice, one that is to be cultivated with consistency over a long period of time. When one learns to mange prāṇa, one learns to manage, or calm, the mind. Peace is available!
