Many tricking athletes neglect or go light on upper body strengthening šŸ‘Ž If this is you, you may be leaving gains on the table when it comes to your movement efficiency and resilience. "Arenā€™t tricking moves mostly driven by the legs?" Upper body training is important for performance and injury prevention in tricking because it helps us build the stability and power needed to control our body weight in handed skills such as in scoot, cartwheels and any other groundwork. We are often supporting our entire body weight on one or two arms during transitional skills. This control is ESSENTIAL for getting the most out of our setups, groundwork while staying safe during crashes. We also use our arms to generate and dissipate torque in our movements. Think of the aggressive setting and ripping for a double, triple or quad. Our arms help us gather tons of force and direct it into the path needed to complete skills safely. If we lack the strength, explosiveness and stability to maintain these positions, we will be less effective on the floor. Upper body limitations can also effect our performance. If youā€™ve tried our Rotational Athlete series, you are familiar with the ā€œanatomical slingsā€. Basically, there are slings of muscle on opposing sides of the body that form Xs across our spine. They are important sources of stability and power transfer, helping us to both transfer and absorb forces from the ground up. If our upper half is weak and inefficient, your ability to transfer force throughout your body will be limited. Neil Toussaint is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Athletic Trainer, Health and Wellness Coach to top performers in the Atlanta TV/Film industry. He has also served the Broadway performing arts community in productions such as Wicked, Moulin Rouge, Lion King & more.
