Yin yoga is a passive practice focused on the connective tissue within your body. During class, postures are held for several rounds of breath, anywhere from 3-10 minutes. The first few minutes target your muscles, releasing habitual bracing patterns, while the next several minutes create tension and compression within your tendons and ligaments. Coupled with mindfulness and breath, yin yoga relieves stress while building a greater range of motion in your joints. Unlike most methods of yoga, Yin Yoga bases its philosophy on the meridian system, an approach found in Chinese medicine. The tension and compression created through Yin’s passive postures help clear stagnant energy and invite fresh blood, oxygen, and energy into these newly created spaces. Yin Yoga is a perfect compliment to a more active, athletic lifestyle, and a great practice for those seeking a way to unwind and de-stress from the demands of everyday life. Props are handy to have around while you’re practicing yin. Two blocks and a bolster are a great start and can easily be replaced by common household items such as pillows, folded blankets, and a thick book. Something is better than nothing when it comes to props in yin and restorative yoga!

About Sarah Osborne

Thanks for stopping by! My name is Sarah, I am a seasoned yoga instructor with nearly a decade of experience teaching. Throughout the years my practice has taken many forms, from fun flow-y vinyasa, to introspective yin, and finally, empowering Ashtanga. All of which you can discover for yourself in my virtual studio! I first started yoga in college when I was young, busy, and broke. Luckily, I was able to get by with the occasional student discount and donation based class. When I couldn’t make it to the studio, you could find me in my dorm room YouTubing yoga flows, scouring Pinterest for sequencing tips, and reading up on meditation techniques. In 2014 I signed up for my very first teacher training. While I always had the desire to teach, my main goal was to establish a solid home practice. Never did I expect to start teaching classes right away, especially being the youngest and least experienced trainee in my class. I was shocked when several months into training the studio called asking if I would like to join their sub list. Since then, I have taught at numerous gyms, studios, colleges, community events, and offered private lessons. Years later after numerous trainings and certifications, I checked off a major goal of mine - to work 1:1 with an experienced instructor as their apprentice. Jovan Tevin crossed my path in 2021 when he brought Universal Yoga and the practice of Ashtanga, a personal interest of mine, to a studio I was working at.
